We are supporting states to establish a school-based, cost-effective in-service training plan supported by the 'trainer-in-the- pocket' model (technology based training materials) and permanent cadres of teacher educators responsible for the coordination, development and delivery of in-service programmes.
Face to Face

TDP is supporting states in-service teacher training (INSET) programme through school-based support mechanism. In INSET, TDP’s model involves a combination of face to face teacher training with technology enhanced support. The intervention has layers of support to teachers at classroom and school levels complemented by technological back-up.

Practice of new classroom activities is at the heart of teachers’ professional development in the programme. This model ensures support for teachers at school level by training more than one teacher per school who can continue supporting each other on a regular basis. Beyond school, TDP also brings peer teachers from the same locality together and creates wider sharing and supporting opportunities for each other.

Supporting States

For teacher training at state level, TDP has engaged selected experts from within the SUBEB and CoEs to serve as a Teacher Development Team (TDT). TDT members are training and supporting the next layer of teacher trainers – the Teacher Facilitators (TFs) - on pedagogy and subject knowledge. The TFs are providing direct training and support to teachers at LGEA and school level.

Technology

A central innovation is the use of low cost mobile technology named “trainer in the pocket”. This involves the use of audio and video images on low cost devices such as tablets or mobile phones for teacher training and classroom use. It provides clear practical models of good teaching practices; makes the lesson more interesting and engaging and is cost-effective, affordable and scalable.

Materials and activities are closely linked with the national and state curriculum and textbooks and reflect real life situations. Contents are developed to improve teachers’ subject knowledge and pedagogic skills. In addition TDP supports the development of teachers’ guides and audio-visual materials produced using the teachers’ guide.
